Anti-Endangered Species Act Bill

Well, the Committee that Representative Pombo headed up, passed the Anti-Endangered Species Act. I can't even imagine Democrats voting with Republicans on this!

THIS WILL EVENTUALLY GO TO THE FULL HOUSE FOR A VOTE AND IF IT PASSES, THEN ON TO THE SENATE.

PLEASE CONTACT YOUR SENATORS AND YOUR REPRESENTATIVES. HERE ARE EVEN MORE REASONS TO VOTE "NO" ON THIS POMBO BILL!

THIS POMBO BILL IS NOT SCIENTIFICALLY CORRECT!

HE STATES THAT THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT IS NOT WORKING!

a. The Endangered Species Act IS IN FACT WORKING! as Ben Long wrote in Tidelands, "Look skyward for a while and you might spy an American bald eagle.....across the United States, the bald eagle is a living, flying example of what works about the Endangered Species Act."

We almost lost them due to pesticides and loss of habitat, now they and other raptors are almost back in many of the our states, not just Canada and Alaska! Even the Peregrine Falcon inhabits NYC and its famous skyscrapers. Now, no one can ever hurt a raptor..they are protected no matter what...despite the Endangered Species Act...no one can ever own a Raptor feather, except a native American or a certified Falconer. But isn't it wonderful to know that the symbol of this country is thriving due to a law enacted 30 years ago?

Write your congressman at Firstgov.com

2. Pombo's report states that only a 15 species have thrived under the ACT is incorrect.

Indicator species within habitats (such as coastal sage shrub in Southern California and the California gnatcatcher) have been the primary indicators that an entire habitat was dying due to overdevelopment...these indicator species might have gone extinct had it not been for the Endangered Species Act. And as such, not only did a Government, Developer, Environment, and Community based GROUPS JOIN HANDS TO mitigate this particular problem to suit everyone and to save a habitat...it saved the low man on the totem pole...the California gnatcatcher (a bird)...but it also saved putting on the Endangered Species list a whole family/genus/species of other animals that made the Coast sage scrub its home.

So you see, the Endangered Species Act is more than just saving one species at a time..it saves the primary indicator species that a habitat is dying and as such all of the animals within..and that can be calculated and as such is a touchstone to an entire region, county, state, and country...and even in this case, because coast sage scrub goes into Mexico....international.

3. ON A VERY SERIOUS NOTE: What kind of message do we send to the rest of the world by diminishing the Endangered Species Act, an act that we helped to transmit across the entire world and one in which we, humans, have been placed in charge of being stewards of the worlds wildlife, by the simple act that we are bipedal and have opposable thumbs and can verbalize our actions? What does it say to third world countries or even our European allies? or any other country trying to preserve their own wildlife if we diminish our own GOLD STANDARD FOR PRESERVING ENDANGERED SPECIES? It says we don't give a darn anymore!

What do you think will happen? Third world countries, who some are trying hard to take care of their people AND THEIR WILDLIFE AT THE SAME TIME..are going to be throwing their wildlife habitats away.....saying, "Well, if the US doesn't care, then why should we?"

We are held up, whether we like it or not, in esteem or in ridicule...but we are looked at as the touchstone country to model their own societies after...you may not agree with that, but inside each and every heart of the people in the third world, that is exactly how they feel. Why would so many want to come here? Remember, what people say and what they do are two entirely different things!

Conclusion: The ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT WAS THE SMARTEST THING THIS COUNTRY HAS DONE TO PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT FOR OUR FUTURE GENERATIONS. Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring" is a testament to that. The hurricanes in the gulf, the warming of the water, is just the tip of the iceberg re: the warming trends happening on this planet.

This planet is fighting back The more we rid ourselves of our natures environments and destroy pristine habitats with various pollutants and as such destroy wildlife, the more the planet will fight us. In the last 150 years since the onset of the industrial revolution, the warming trend has never been higher..and extinction, while we don't like to think about it, is a natural process. It has occurred throughout history at all times...no matter what..

And we humans are NOT IMMUNE TO EXTINCTION OURSELVES.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS, WE NEED TO CONTINUE TO PROTECT OUR MOST ENDANGERED ANIMALS...AND THEIR HABITATS.

Because When the ANIMALS OF THE WORLD START TO GO faster than they are now...THROUGH WHATEVER MEANS...HABITAT DESTRUCTION...DNA CHANGES...AIR AND WATER POLLUTION...GLOBAL WARMING = AKA CLIMATE CHANGES....HUMANKIND IS NOT FAR BEHIND...

Every scientist in the world, who is worth their salt and their degrees knows this. Politicians only know their pocketbooks.

PLEASE CALL OR WRITE (FIRSTGOV.COM) YOUR SENATOR OR CONGRESSMAN NOW..DON'T LET THIS POMBO BILL CHANGE THE ENDANGERED SPECIES ACT.

WE CAN'T AFFORD, AS HUMANS, TO WAIT 'TIL WE BECOME THE INDICATOR SPECIES THAT OUR HABITATS, IN ALL WEATHER SYSTEMS, ARE ABOUT TO BE DESTROYED.
